Assembly of pistons and connecting rods (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116)

Before installation, check the top surface of the piston head (if new pistons are installed). The piston diameter, group number and the last two digits of the part number must match the numbers on the cylinder block.

Prepare a mandrel for installing piston pins.

Lubricate the piston pins and connect the piston and connecting rod using hand pressure. The arrow on the piston head and the hole in the upper connecting rod head must be positioned according to the instructions.

Insert retaining rings into the piston bosses on both sides and check their position in the grooves.

Check the rotation of the piston relative to the connecting rod.

Use pliers to install the piston rings into the piston grooves, paying particular attention to the position of the two upper compression rings (see fig. 69). If there are no pliers, use the method shown in Fig. 70.
