Airbag Components — Removal and Installation (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W124)

1. Remove the ground cable from the battery. In the driver's footwell, remove the carpeted floor, then remove the screws and lift the footrest off the floor. Disconnect the red electrical connector from the air bag system.

2. From the back of the steering wheel, remove the two screws securing the airbag, turning the steering wheel to access the screws.

3. Position the steering wheel in a straight-ahead position and carefully remove the airbag from the steering wheel and disconnect the electrical connector from the rear of the airbag.

Installation



1. Connect the electrical connector to the airbag and install the airbag in place in the center of the steering wheel. Make sure that the wire is not pinched by the airbag. Secure the airbag with screws, tightening them to the required torque. In this case, first tighten the left mounting screw.

2. Reconnect the red connector of the air bag system and replace the footrest and carpet. Make sure that no one is in the car and reconnect the battery. Turn on the ignition and check the air bag indicator light.

Removal



2. Remove the large mounting bolt, then remove the airbag from the instrument panel and disconnect the electrical connector from it.

Installation



1. Connect the electrical connector to the airbag, install the airbag on the instrument panel and secure it with the bolt. Check that the airbag is correctly positioned in the instrument panel and, if adjustment is necessary, remove and install the airbag again.
