Steering Wheel Airbag Unit — Removal and Installation (Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168)

Removal



Warning: Read the safety precautions when working with airbags.


1. Disconnect the ground (-) wire terminal from the negative battery terminal, after turning off the ignition.

Warning! When you disconnect the battery from the radio, the security code is deleted, as well as all automatic settings on the radio station. Therefore, first read the provisions of Chapter "Battery - removal and installation".


2. Insulate the battery terminals to prevent accidental contact.

3. From the back of the steering wheel 1, unscrew the two socket head screws that secure the airbag unit. Hold the unit to prevent it from falling (see illustration).

4. Remove the airbag unit 3 from the steering wheel and disconnect the plug 4 located on the back of the unit (see illustration).

5. Place the removed airbag unit with the steering wheel cover facing up.



Warning! Do not leave the removed airbag unattended. If necessary, lock it in a safe or drawer.


Installation



6. Install the airbag unit to the steering wheel and connect the power plug.

7. Lubricate the screws securing the airbag unit to the steering wheel with a special agent to prevent them from loosening spontaneously, and tighten the screws to a torque of 6 Nm.

8. Connect the negative (-) cable terminal to the battery terminal.

9. Set up the electronic clock.

10. Enter the security code into the radio receiver.
