The filling of the pillow with air occurs by means of an electric discharge.
A-class vehicles are equipped with airbags for the driver and passenger, as well as, depending on the configuration, side airbags and airbags that protect the head from impact, as well as seat belt tensioners.
On the covers that cover the airbags, as a rule, the inscription is embossed «SRS Airbag».
A rear-facing child seat must not be installed on the front passenger seat. The exception is a special child seat with an automatic recognition system.
Attention! For safety reasons, we do not recommend that you carry out repairs yourself on parts related to the airbag system or seat belt tensioners.
Before removing and installing the driver's airbag, the following precautions must be observed:
1. Disconnect the wire terminal from the negative pole of the battery «masses» (-), by turning off the ignition first.
Attention! When the battery is disconnected from the radio, the security code is deleted, as well as all automatic settings on the radio. Therefore, first read the provisions of the chapter «Battery - removal and installation».
2. Insulate the battery terminals to prevent accidental contact. At the time of connecting the battery in the cabin should not be people.
3. Set the wheels to straight ahead. This corresponds to the neutral (average) steering wheel position.
4. Remove any static electricity before removing the airbag unit.
To do this, just touch the latch of the lock or body with your hand.
Precautions related to all airbags
5. Never install elements of airbags from another car, as well as the steering wheel of another car - on your car. When replacing, always use new parts.
6. Have the airbag system and belt tensioner system checked by an appropriate workshop after any accident, even a minor one, that did not cause the airbags to deploy.
7. Replace without fail a steering wheel after operation of an airbag on a steering wheel. When the side airbag is deployed, the trim on the door upholstery is replaced. After the front passenger air bag deploys, the instrument panel must be replaced.
8. Replace the airbag control unit without fail after they have been deployed three times.
Have the airbag system checked by a specialist workshop.
9. Do not test the system with a test light, voltmeter, or ohmmeter.
10. Replace the components of the airbag system if they have fallen from a height of more than 0.5 m.
11. Do not expose the components of the airbag system to high temperatures or open flames. Not allowed, even short-term exposure to temperatures above +100°C.
12. Keep airbag system components free of water, grease, or oil. They must be removed immediately with a dry cloth or rag.
13. Stow the airbag removed from the steering wheel so that the airbag cover faces up. If the removed airbag is not lying down, the charge will be thrown out if the explosive device is accidentally activated, which can lead to injury.
14. Do not leave the removed airbag unattended.
15. Do not disassemble the airbag unit. In case of failure, the unit should be completely replaced. Due to the fact that the airbag contains an explosive, the removed airbag should be stored under lock and key.
The airbag must be disposed of by a workshop. Before scrapping the car, you should contact a workshop to dismantle the cushions.
When performing electric welding work on the vehicle, after disconnecting the battery, also disconnect the multi-pin plug of the airbag system control unit.
