Airbags — Safety Precautions (Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168)

0
The airbag system consists of an impact sensor, a blasting charge, a control unit and the airbag itself.

The pillow is filled with air by means of an electric discharge.

A-class cars are equipped with driver and passenger airbags, and, depending on the configuration, side airbags and airbags that protect the head from impact, as well as seat belt tensioners.

The covers that cover the airbags usually have an inscription stamped on them "SRS Airbag".

A child seat with the backrest facing against the direction of travel is not permitted on the front passenger seat. The only exception is a special child seat with an automatic recognition system.

Please note: For safety reasons, we do not recommend that you perform repair work on parts related to the airbag system or seat belt tensioners yourself.

Before removing and installing the driver's airbag, the following precautions must be observed:

1. Disconnect the ground (-) wire terminal from the negative battery terminal, after turning off the ignition.

Warning! When you disconnect the battery from the radio, the security code is deleted, as well as all automatic settings on the radio station. Therefore, first read the provisions of Chapter "Battery - removal and installation".

2. Insulate the battery terminals to avoid accidental contact. No one should be in the vehicle when connecting the battery.

3. Set the wheels to the straight-ahead position. This corresponds to the neutral (middle) position of the steering wheel.

4. Remove any possible static electricity before removing the airbag unit.

To do this, simply touch the lock retainer or the car body with your hand.

Precautions applicable to all airbags

5. Never install airbag components from another vehicle, or a steering wheel from another vehicle, on your vehicle. Always install new components when replacing.

6. Have the airbag and seat belt tensioner system checked at a qualified workshop after any accident, even a minor one, that did not result in the airbags deploying.

7. The steering wheel must be replaced after the airbag on the steering wheel has been deployed. If the side airbag has been deployed, the door trim pad must be replaced. If the front passenger airbag has been deployed, the instrument panel must be replaced.

8. Be sure to replace the airbag control unit after they have deployed three times.

Checking the condition of the airbag system should be entrusted to a specialized workshop.

9. Do not test the system with a test light, voltmeter or ohmmeter.

10. Replace air bag system components if they have fallen from a height of more than 0.5 m.

11. Do not expose airbag system components to high temperatures or open fire. Exposure to temperatures above +100°C, even for short periods, is not permitted.

12. Do not allow water, grease or oil to come into contact with the airbag system components. They should be removed immediately with a dry cloth or rag.

13. Store the airbag removed from the steering wheel with the airbag cover facing up. If the airbag is stored in a different position, the charge will be ejected if the detonator is accidentally activated, which may cause injury.

14. Do not leave the removed airbag unattended.

15. Do not disassemble the airbag unit. If the unit fails, it must be replaced completely. Since the airbag contains an explosive substance, the removed airbag must be kept under lock and key.

The disposal of the airbag must be carried out by a workshop. Before handing over the car for scrap metal, you should contact a workshop to dismantle the airbags.

When performing electric welding work on a vehicle, after disconnecting the battery, the multi-pin plug of the airbag control unit should also be disconnected.
