Removal and installation the tailgate (station wagon models) (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

0
1. Remove the luggage compartment light without disconnecting the wiring.

2. Loosen the mounting screws and release the rear panel of the body ceiling trim from the latches.

3. With the battery disconnected, mark and disconnect the wires from the roof connector and release the cable ties securing the wire harness.

4. Depending on the equipment, remove the rear speakers and disconnect their wiring.

5. Disconnect the tailgate window washer pipe and, depending on the equipment, the vacuum pipes of the central locking system.

6. Support the tailgate, remove the spring retaining rings and disconnect the gas-filled door struts from the hinges.

7. Mark the position of the hinge bolts with a pencil and unscrew the bolts a few turns.

8. With the help of an assistant, remove the bolts while supporting the tailgate, and then remove the tailgate itself.

9. Install in the reverse order of removal, placing the bolts according to the previously applied marks before tightening them. The wire connections should be as you marked them. Ensure that the door is centered in the opening and aligned with other body parts. To adjust the door, loosen the door hinge bolts and position it so that it is flush with the body surface or is offset from it within 1.0 mm.

10. To adjust the lock retainer, slightly loosen its mount and the side stop screws, then close the tailgate so that it is flush or no more than 1.0 mm away from the body surface, then smoothly open the door and tighten the screws. If necessary, you can put additional adjusting shims under the retainer or side stops.
