Checking the main parts
2. When installing new spark plugs, check the high voltage wires every time.
3. When removing high-voltage wires from spark plugs, you should take the tip, and not the wire itself. Otherwise, the connection may be disconnected (see fig. 29.3).

4. Check the inside of the wire end. Pay attention to traces of corrosion, which has the appearance of a crust of white powder. Put the tip back on the spark plug and make sure it is tight on the spark plug. If this is not the case, remove the tip and use a pair of pliers to compress the metal contact inside the wire tip so that it is securely attached to the spark plug.
5. Using a clean cloth, wipe the wires all over and remove all dirt and grease. After cleaning the wire, check if it is burnt, cracked or otherwise damaged. Do not forcefully twist the wires or stretch the wire - the wire inside is brittle and may break.
6. Remove the other end of the wire from the distributor cap (see fig. 29.6). Grasp only the end of the wire. Check for corrosion and secure fit of the wire on the cap as well as on the spark plug side. If you have an ohmmeter, check the resistance of the wire between the cat on the spark plug side and the segment on the side of the distributor cap. When finished, install the wire securely.

7. Check the remaining wires in the same way.
8. If new high voltage wires are required, purchase the correct kit for your vehicle and engine.
9. Remove the mounting screws or loosen the clamps and remove the distributor cover (see fig. 29.9, a, b). Wipe the lid clean and check it carefully inside and out. Look for cracks, soot deposits and wear, burnt or loose contacts. Check that the central carbon electrode is not worn, moves freely under the action of the spring and makes good contact with the runner (see fig. 29.9. V). Also check the cover seal for wear or damage and replace if necessary. Remove the slider from the distributor shaft and check the slider. Usually the slider and distributor cap are changed when installing new high-voltage spark plug wires.
