General information (Mercedes-Benz Vito W639)

The OM 646 diesel engine is a modernization of the OM 611 engine, which was widely used in previous Mercedes-Benz models and was installed in passenger cars, off-road vehicles, minibuses and commercial vehicles.

This engine is multi-valve (16 valves) engine with a common rail diesel direct injection system.

Daimler-Chrysler AG produces 14 modifications of this engine, differing in configuration, power ratings, and level of harmful emissions.

In the manufacturer's documents, engines are designated by a six-digit code. This code is part of the engine number.

In practice, three versions of the OM 646 engine are used in Vito-Viano vehicles:

• 646.982 (MS2) (80 kW, 109 hp);
• 646.982 (MSZ) (110 kW, 150 hp);
• 646.983 (MS1) (65 kW, 88 hp).

Engine 646.983 is installed only in cargo versions of the vehicle.
