Setting the ignition timing (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

1 — mark on the high voltage terminal of the spark plug of the 1st cylinder

1. Turn the crankshaft to TDC of the piston of the 1st cylinder.



2. Remove the distributor cap. Make sure the mark and the distributor rotor match.

3. Install the distributor cap and check the ignition timing with a stroboscope.

4. Connect the stroboscope and tachometer.

5. Run the engine at idle speed and make sure that the marks on the timing gear cover and on the crankshaft pulley scale are aligned.

6. If necessary, loosen the distributor sensor mounting bracket and turn the distributor sensor housing until the marks match.

7. Tighten the bracket mounting screw.
