Battery troubleshooting
CAUSE | REMEDY |
Electrolyte level too low
| Recharge. Evaporation (especially in summer) | Add distilled water to the prescribed level (for a charged battery). |
Electrolyte is leaking from the vent cap
| Charging voltage too high | Check the voltage regulator, replace it if necessary. |
| Electrolyte level too high | Suck out excess electrolyte using a densimeter with a pipette. |
Electrolyte density too low
| The density of the electrolyte in one cell is clearly lower than in the other cells | Short circuit in the cell. Replace or restore the battery. |
| The density of the electrolyte in two adjacent cells is clearly lower than in the other cells | The partition is not hermetically sealed, a conductive connection is created between the cells, as a result of which the cells are discharged. Restore the battery. |
| The battery is discharged | Charge the battery. |
| Generator faulty | Check the generator, repair or replace if necessary. |
| Short circuit in the electrical network | Check the electrical system. |
| The electrolyte is diluted with water due to an error during battery maintenance | Adjust the electrolyte composition. |
Electrolyte density too high
| Electrolyte was added | Adjust the electrolyte composition. |
Too low set power, voltage drops
| The battery is discharged | Recharge the battery. |
| Charging voltage too low | Check the voltage regulator, replace it if necessary. |
| The connecting terminals are loose or oxidized | Clean the connecting terminals and lightly lubricate, especially the underside, with acid-resistant protective grease, tighten the fastening screws. |
| Bad connections on the battery housing - body engine | Check the connections (terminals) to the body, if necessary, restore the metal connections or tighten the screw connections tightly. |
| Excessive self-discharge of the battery due to contamination of the electrolyte | Replace the battery. |
| The battery plates may be sulfated (grey-white coating on positive and negative plates) | Charge the battery with a small current to slowly remove the deposits. If the specified power remains too low after repeated charging and discharging, replace the battery. |
| The battery plate is worn out, the active mass of the plates has fallen off | Replace the battery. |
The battery is not charged enough
| Fault in the generator, tensioner or line connections | Check the alternator and tensioner, repair or replace; secure the wires properly. |
| The V-belt is loose | Tighten or replace the V-belt. |
| Too many current consumers are connected | Install a more powerful battery; perhaps you should use a more powerful generator. |
