Electronic control unit (ECU)

Removal

1. The cruise control system ECU is located behind the lower instrument panel on the driver's side.

2. Remove the headlight dimmer switch as described previously.

3. Remove the lower portion of the instrument panel on the driver's side as described in Chapter 11.

4. Disconnect the wire connectors, then unscrew the mounting screws and remove the ZBU from below the instrument panel.

Installation

5. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When finished, check the operation of the constant speed drive system.

Constant speed motion system actuator

Removal

6. The actuator is located on the side of the cylinder block.

7. On most models it will be necessary to remove the air cleaner housing to gain access to the actuator. If necessary, to improve access, release the parking brake, then raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and support it on stands (see "Lifting the car and placing it on supports"). Loosen the mounting screws and remove the engine protection (where it is installed).

8. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, then trace the wiring from the actuator and disconnect the connector.

9. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, carefully pry the connecting rod away from the actuator ball joint.

10. Loosen and remove the nuts/bolts (depending on what is used), securing the actuator bracket to the cylinder block and remove the unit from the engine.

11. If necessary, unscrew the bolts securing the actuator to its bracket, remembering the correct location of the rubber supports and bushings.

Installation

12. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Make sure that the rubber mounts of the actuator are in good condition. If necessary, the length of the connecting rod can be adjusted by loosening the lock nut and screwing in / out the ball joint on the rod. When the length of the rod is adjusted, connect it to the actuator and tighten the lock nut securely.

System switch

13. The switch is an integral part of the steering column switch block. Refer to paragraph 5. Once the switch assembly is removed, the constant speed control switch can be unhooked.

Speed sensor

Removal

14. The speed sensor is attached to the rear of the speedometer.

15. To access the sensor, remove the instrument cluster as described in paragraph 8.

16. Loosen the mounting screw and remove the sensor from the back of the speedometer.

Installation

17. Installation is carried out in reverse order.
