The system is activated in the event of a severe frontal collision with an impact force exceeding a preset value, depending on the point of impact. The airbag inflates within milliseconds and forms a safety cushion between the driver and the steering wheel. This prevents contact between the body and the steering wheel / dashboard, thereby reducing the risk of injury / trauma. The airbag then deflates almost instantly. The control unit also activates the front seat belt tensioners at the same time as the airbag (see Chapter 11).
Each time the ignition is switched on, the safety system performs a test. The self-test takes approximately 4 seconds, during which the control lamp on the instrument panel lights up. When the test is complete, the lamp should go out. If the lamp does not light up, stays on longer than required, or lights up when the car starts moving, there is a fault in the safety system. The car should be taken to a service station, a Mercedes-Benz dealer for inspection at the earliest opportunity.
Warning: Before performing any work on the restraint system, disconnect the negative battery terminal. Pull back the carpet at the front of the passenger footwell, then unscrew the screws and remove the footrest from the floor. Locate the red connector for the restraint system test lead and disconnect it. This will disable the restraint system. When you are finished, reconnect the test lead connector and make sure no one is in the vehicle when connecting the battery.
Warning: Do not heat the airbags to temperatures above 10L7 C. When removing the airbag, make sure it is stored in the correct position to avoid possible inflation.
Warning: Do not allow solvent or cleaner to come into contact with the airbag components. Clean them with a damp cloth only.

Warning: The cushions and control unit are impact sensitive. If either of them falls, they should be replaced.
Warning: Before performing electric welding on the vehicle, disconnect the air bag control unit connector.
