The system is activated in the event of a severe frontal impact with a force greater than a predetermined value, depending on the impact point. The airbag inflates in milliseconds and forms a secure cushion between the driver and the steering wheel. This prevents contact between the body and the steering wheel/dashboard, thereby reducing the risk of injury/injury. After that, the pillow is almost instantly deflated. The control unit also actuates the front seat belt pretensioners simultaneously with the airbag (see chapter 11).
Each time the ignition is switched on, the security system checks. The self-test takes approximately 4 seconds, during which the indicator lamp on the instrument panel is illuminated. When the check is completed, the pump should go out. If the lamp does not light up, stays on longer than necessary, or lights up when the vehicle is started, there is a malfunction in the security system. The vehicle should be taken to a workshop, a Mercedes-Benz dealer and checked as soon as possible.
Warning: Before doing any work on the security system, disconnect the negative battery terminal. Pull back the front mat in the passenger footwell, then unscrew the fixing screws and remove the foot pad from the floor. Locate the security test wire connector that is colored red and disconnect it. This will disable the security system. When you're done. connect the test lead connector and when connecting the battery, make sure that no one is in the cabin.
Warning: Do not heat the airbags above 10L7 C. When removing the airbag, make sure it is stored in the correct position to avoid possible inflation.
Warning: Do not allow solvent or cleaner to come into contact with airbag components. They should only be cleaned with a damp cloth.
Warning: Airbags and control box are impact sensitive. If any of them fall, they should be replaced.
Warning: Before electrical welding on the vehicle, disconnect the airbag control module connector.
