The electronic direct ignition system is an integral part of the engine management system. The main working components of the ignition system are spark plugs and ignition coils. The distribution of the HV voltage supply to the spark plugs by candles is controlled by the electronic control unit (ECM).

External adjustment of the ignition timing is not performed - if the required settings are violated, the failed components should be replaced.
Control elements of the ignition system are not subject to wear and do not require regular maintenance. According to Maintenance Schedule (see chapter Ongoing care and maintenance) only the spark plugs should be replaced.
Basic information and illustrative material on the operation and sensors of control systems and fuel injection of gasoline and diesel engines are presented in Sections The principle of operation of the control system and injection of a gasoline engine and General information.
Safety measures when working with ignition and fuel injection control systems
To prevent personal injury and/or failure of ignition/injection control components, the following must be observed:
- Do not touch the electrical wiring of the ignition system and do not disconnect its contact sockets while the engine is running / a rotating starter;
- Disconnect/connect fuel lines of the injection control system/wiring of the ignition system, as well as connect/disconnect any diagnostic and measuring equipment only with the ignition off;
- Do not allow people with an implanted pacemaker to perform maintenance work on the electronic ignition system;
- Do not allow a short circuit to ground terminals No. 1 of the ignition coils;
- Do not connect a test lamp to terminals No. 1 of the ignition coils.
