The electronic direct ignition system is an integral part of the engine management system. The main working components of the ignition system are spark plugs and ignition coils.
The distribution of high voltage supply to the spark plugs is controlled by the electronic control unit (ECM).
External adjustment of the ignition timing is not performed; if the required settings are violated, the failed components must be replaced.
The ignition system controls are not subject to wear and do not require regular maintenance. In accordance with the Maintenance Schedule (see Chapter Schedule of current maintenance) only the spark plugs should be replaced.
Safety precautions when working with ignition and fuel injection control systems
To prevent injury to personnel and/or failure of ignition/injection control system components, the following must be observed:
Publication reprinted from this resource (Mercedesman.ru)
- Do not touch or disconnect ignition system wiring while the engine is running/starter is cranking;
- Disconnect/connect fuel injection control system lines/ignition system wiring, as well as connect/disconnect any diagnostic and measuring equipment only with the ignition off;
- Do not allow people with an implanted pacemaker to perform maintenance work on the electronic ignition system;
- Do not short-circuit ignition coil terminals #1 to ground;
- Do not connect the test lamp to terminals No.1 of the ignition coils.
