Knocking in the engine (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W210)

0
Knocking in a warm engine almost always indicates damage to the bearings. Most often, damage occurs on connecting rod bearings, less often on the support bearings of the crankshaft. Replacing a damaged bearing requires a large amount of repair work.

Bearing diagnostics

Increase the revs and then release the gas. If a knocking noise occurs that does not stop as the revs decrease, stop driving and park the car.

A loud knock at high engine speeds, decreasing or disappearing when the gas is released, indicates a major bearing failure.
