1. Remove the cylinder head covers.

2. Remove the radiator.

3. Remove the generator drive belt.

4. Remove the thermostat housing.

5. Remove the guide roller.



6. Remove the cooling system hose (9a).

7. Remove the rotor and runner (4) of the distributor (engines series 120.980).

8. Remove the protective cover and seal.

9. Lift the power steering pump reservoir up and remove it along with the pipes.

12. Loosen the bolts (arrows) and remove the front covers.

13. Replace the rubber gasket and sealing ring under the cooling system pipe.



14. Wipe the sealing surfaces of the front cover and cylinder head. 15. Check the timing chain guide bridge gaskets for signs of damage and replace them if necessary.

Installation



When installing the top covers, make sure that the rubber gasket is not displaced downwards (arrows)

1. Apply sealant 002 989 7320 10 to the groove of the timing chain cover of the left and right cylinder heads. Insert a new gasket (without sealant) into a dry groove. Lubricate the top of the gasket with engine oil. Lubricate the contact surfaces of the cylinder head with the same sealant.

2. On 120.980 engines, install the sleeve (1) on the exhaust camshaft. Lubricate the sealing lip of the radial oil seal (2) with engine oil.

3. Install the front covers. When installing them, make sure that the rubber gasket is not displaced downwards, remove the chamfer from the bottom of the gasket. On the left cover, remove the plug (31), the guide lever pin and reinstall them after installing the cover.

4. Install the cover mounting bolts. Tighten the bottom bolts first.

5. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal. The cutout on the runner (4) should be aligned with the pin on the camshaft.
