Checking and replacing the hydraulic valve clearance compensator (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126)

If noise occurs, check the compensator as follows:
  • Install the corresponding cam head vertically opposite the rocker arm.
  • Use the hammer handle to press on the rocker arm. If the ball pressure bolt drops too quickly compared to the other ball pressure bolts, the hydraulic valve clearance compensator needs to be replaced.
  • Try moving the rocker arm by hand. If it has play, then it is necessary to check the adjustment of the main position of the compensator.

The compensator is replaced as follows:
  • Remove the rocker arm.
  • Unscrew the element using a 24 mm socket wrench.
  • Lubricate the thread of the new compensator, screw it in and tighten it to 60 Nm. If the compensator is tightened to a higher torque, it may become warped and damaged.
  • Install the rocker arm and check the basic position.
