General repair instructions (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116)

0
The general repair provisions set out in this manual are quite simple and clear. If you consistently use the descriptions and drawings, there will be no difficulties in carrying out the work.

Tables at the end (section 19) contain information about the dimensions and adjustment data, they should be used for all types of repair work. Some sections of the manual do not always provide the necessary information about the dimensions or adjustment data, so use the above tables. This is especially important when specifying the model to avoid possible errors.

Simple operations, such as "opening the hood" when working in the engine compartment, or "loosening the wheel nuts" when working on the wheel brakes, are not always mentioned, as this goes without saying. On the contrary, complex work is described in great detail. When performing each type of repair work, it is necessary to pay attention to the following instructions:
  • Bolts and nuts should always be clean and lightly lubricated, and should not have any damage or burrs. In case of doubt, replace with new bolts or nuts. Self-locking nuts can only be used once.
  • Degreasing of bolts and nuts is not allowed.
  • When working, always use tables with data on tightening torques for threaded connections. The data is divided into sections and is easy to use.
  • All sealing washers, gaskets, lock plates, lock washers, cotter pins, rubber O-rings must be replaced with new ones. When dismantling shafts, the corresponding seals must be replaced with new ones during assembly. The working surfaces of the seals must be lubricated before installation and attention must be paid to the position of the seal relative to the sealed parts.
  • Indications of the right and left sides of the car are based on the direction of the car's movement forward, and similarly, the indication "in front" and "behind". In doubtful cases, additional explanations are given in the text.
  • Pay special attention to safety precautions when carrying out work related to repairing brakes, wheel suspensions and all work under the lower part of the body, when the car must be raised. The jack supplied with the car is intended only for changing wheels on the road. For lifting during repairs, it is necessary to use garage lifts and stands that securely fix the position of the raised car. When using bricks as a stand, be sure to place a wooden pad between the car and the stand.
  • Lubricants, oils, protective coatings of the underbody and all mineral substances have an aggressive effect on rubber elements and brake drives. Rubber elements should be especially protected from fuel. When washing brake parts, use only brake fluid or alcohol, do not allow brake fluid to get on paint surfaces.
  • To ensure quality repairs, it is necessary to use only recommended original spare parts. In all doubtful cases, coordinate the use of certain parts with the manufacturer.
  • When ordering spare parts, it is necessary to accurately indicate the model designation with the chassis number, engine number and year of manufacture.

All repair work on the car, especially related to brakes, steering, must be done carefully and accurately. The repaired car must guarantee road safety.
