Body and its equipment — general description (Mercedes-Benz E-Class W123)

The body structure is welded, all-metal, with a trauma-safe passenger compartment, with front and rear sections that absorb impact energy. The body is available in sedan, coupe and station wagon versions. The body equipment includes a roof hatch and a vacuum door locking system with central control. The roof hatch can be with manual or electric drive; in the latter case, an emergency manual drive is provided. The hood, trunk lid, doors and front fenders are bolted on and are easy to replace. When installing, it is necessary to maintain the appropriate gaps.

The gap between the body parts must be the same along the entire length. The permissible deviation is 0.5 mm. The dimensions shown in the figure are given in millimeters with a tolerance of ±0.5 mm.

Every 20,000 km lubricate the door hinges with a universal grease using a syringe. In addition, at the same time

on a station wagon, lubricate the tailgate hinges with engine oil. Also apply a small amount of grease to the door lock latch and pawl.

Every 48,000 km, check the cleanliness of all body drainage holes.

Every 12 months, lubricate the sunroof guides and check the drainage channels for leaks by pumping them with compressed air from a tire pump. At the same time, check the base of the body for damage and corrosion, especially the condition of the anti-corrosion coating of the underbody. If necessary, apply a new anti-corrosion coating and carry out the appropriate repairs.
