Gear Selector Lever — Removal and Installation (Mercedes-Benz C-Class W201)

Removal



1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2. Apply the parking brake, then raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands (see "Lifting the car and placing it on supports").

3. Working from underneath the vehicle, remove the metal retainer and disconnect the gear selector lever from the shift rod (see fig. 2.3).

4. Remove the cover from the central control panel as described in Chapter 11. On later models, you may have to remove the entire center console.

5. Disconnect the indicator light wire from the light distributor and/or remove the bulb from the lever housing.

6. Disconnect the wire plug from the "economy" / "standard" switch.

7. Loosen the mounting screws, then remove the gear selector lever from the vehicle floor (see fig. 2.7). Remove the gasket.

Installation



8. Check the condition of the gasket and, if necessary, replace it.

9. Install the gasket on the bottom of the gear selector lever assembly, then insert the screws to hold the gasket in place.

10. Further installation is carried out in reverse order.
