Engine Repair — Assembly Procedure (Mercedes-Benz C-Class W201)

1. Before assembly, make sure you have all the necessary parts and tools. Read the repair procedure description carefully to know the order of actions and to be sure that you have everything you need at hand. In addition to the tool, you will need a sealant to seal the threads in almost all joints. To assemble the main sections of the engine, you will also need a tube of sealant (liquid gasket) and a short-pile roller.

2. To save time and avoid trouble, the engine assembly can be done in the following order (see fig. 17.2):

• a) Crankshaft (paragraph 19).
• b) Pistons / connecting rods (paragraph 20).
• c) Oil pump.
• d) Oil pan.
• d) Flywheel/drive plate.
• e) Cylinder head.
• g) Chain, tensioner and sprockets of the camshaft drive chain.
• c) Engine attachments.

3. At this stage, all engine parts must be absolutely clean and dry, all faults must be eliminated in advance. Components must be in individual packages or laid out on an absolutely clean work surface.
