Schedule of current maintenance (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W140)

0
Contents: Engine oil change and related work ↡ Additional works ↡
The suggested recommendations assume that the vehicle is serviced by the owner himself, as opposed to work performed at a Mercedes-Benz dealership service station. Although this schedule is based on the manufacturer's recommendations, the intervals between most of the procedures can be shortened at the owner's discretion, for example, checking and changing lubricants and fluids should be performed at intervals that ensure maximum engine or drive life. In addition, if the owner is interested in keeping the vehicle in maximum operating condition for possible resale, many procedures can be performed more frequently. We welcome such an initiative.

Initial servicing and inspection of a new vehicle must be performed at a representative service station of the company in order to fulfill the terms of the warranty obligation. Such inspection is free of charge.

Engine oil change and related work

(every 9000 km or once a year)

Replace the engine oil and oil filter, adjust the oil level, check the levels of working fluids in the engine compartment tanks.

List A: The procedure is performed if the mileage since the last service according to List B is less than 22,000 km.

List B: The procedure is performed if the mileage since the last service according to List B is more than 22,000 km.

Primary maintenance is performed according to list B.

(B) Brake system

Check that the parking brake is functioning properly and that it holds the vehicle securely on a slope.

Car interior

(A and B) Check the proper functioning of the following devices:
  • (A) Remove the wheels and check the remaining thickness of the brake shoe friction linings.
  • (B) Assess the condition of the brake discs.
  • (A) Replace/rotate wheels (all four wheels must be the same size).
  • (B) Check the condition of the tires.
  • (A) Adjust the tire inflation pressure and measure the remaining tread depth.

The bottom of the car

  • Check underbody components for leaks.
  • Check the condition and correct routing of hydraulic and fuel lines.
  • Check the condition of the ball joints and silent blocks.
  • Assess the degree of wear of the steering drive components (play).

Engine compartment

Note: The procedure for opening the hood to gain access to the engine compartment is described in Section Access to the underhood space Chapters User manual.

  • (B) Check the components located in the engine compartment for signs of leaks.
  • (B) Check the condition and correct routing of hydraulic and fuel lines.
  • (A and B) Replace the engine oil and oil filter.

Check the levels of all working fluids:
  • (B) Cooling systems;
  • (A) Brake system;
  • (A) Windscreen washers;
  • (B) Power steering systems;
  • (B) Adjusting the shock absorber stiffness;
  • (B) Check the condition of the drive belts;
  • (B) Lubricate the throttle actuator components, check the actuator for proper operation;
  • (B) Replace the dust filter (without carbon element);
  • (A and B) Check the operation of the hood lock latch.

Luggage compartment

  • (B) Check the electrolyte level in the battery.
  • (A) Check the inflation pressure of the spare tire.

Additional works

Every 2 years

Replace brake fluid. Check the condition of the paintwork, chassis components, load-bearing and supporting body elements.

Every 3 years

Replace the coolant. Clean and lubricate the guide channels and sliders of the upper hatch cover.

Every 48,000 km (4 years)

Check the condition of the flexible couplings of the cardan shaft.

Every 96,000 km (4 years)

Replace the fuel filter, engine air filter element. Replace the spark plugs.

Every 72,000 km (2 years)

Replace the cabin air filter and pre-carbon filter.

Every 120,000 km (4 years)

Replace the carbon filter.

Attention! Be careful when working in the engine compartment, the cooling system fan may continue to operate for about 30 seconds after the engine is turned off!

Warning! The electronic ignition system generates very high voltage! Be careful and take all necessary precautions when servicing any components of the system, including not only the main (ignition module, coil and high voltage wires), but also related ones, such as spark plug connectors, tachometer and other connected diagnostic equipment. Particular care should be taken when the engine is running, during its start-up, with the ignition on (key in position 2) and when turning the crankshaft manually. Persons with an implanted pacemaker should not be allowed to service ignition system components!

Note: The procedure for opening the hood is described in Section Access to the underhood space Chapters User manual.
