Note: A new steering wheel bolt will be required for installation.
Removing
1. Position the front wheels in the straight ahead direction and insert the ignition key to unlock the steering wheel.
Models without airbags
2. Pry off the Mercedes-Benz emblem / horn button in the center of the steering wheel (see fig. 17.2).

3. Loosen and remove the wheel bolt (see fig. 17.3).

4. If marks are absent, put them between a steering wheel and a steering column shaft. After that, remove the steering wheel from the splines of the steering column. If the steering wheel is tight, knock it out by hitting it near the center with the palm of your hand, or by turning it from side to side, pull it out of the splines of the shaft.
5. Examine contacts of a sound signal and a contact ring. If wear or damage is found, replace.
Models equipped with airbags
6. Remove the cushion from the center of the steering wheel as described in Chapter 12.
7. Remove the steering wheel as described above in p.p. 3-5.
Installation
Airbag Base Models
8. Installation is carried out in the reverse order, taking into account the following points:
- A) Apply vaseline to the horn contact ring and install the steering wheel on the column shaft, aligning the marks made before removal.
- b) Install a new steering wheel bolt and tighten to specification.
Models equipped with airbags
9. Installation is carried out in the reverse order, taking into account the following points:
- A) If the contact part turned when the steering wheel was removed, center it by pushing the contact part down and turning its center part counterclockwise until it stops. From this position, turn the center back three full turns clockwise.
- b) Apply a layer of petroleum jelly to the horn contact ring and install the steering wheel on the column shaft. align the uterus made before removal.
- V) Check that the dowel pin on top of the steering column aligns correctly with the recess in the contact part when installing the steering wheel.
- G) Align the wheel with the spokes of the column, matching the marks made before removal, and tighten the steering wheel mounting bolt with the required force.
- d) Install the airbags as described in Chapter 12.
