Note: A new steering wheel mounting bolt will be required for installation.
Removal
1. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead direction and, after inserting the ignition key, unlock the steering wheel.
Models without airbags
2. Pry up the Mercedes-Benz emblem/horn button in the center of the steering wheel (see fig. 17.2).

3. Loosen and remove the wheel mounting bolt (see fig. 17.3).

4. If there are no marks, put them between the steering wheel and the steering column shaft. Then remove the steering wheel from the steering column splines. If the steering wheel is tight, knock it out by hitting it with your palm near the center, or by turning it from side to side, pull it out of the shaft splines.
5. Inspect the horn contacts and contact ring. Replace if worn or damaged.
Models equipped with airbags
6. Remove the cushion from the center of the steering wheel as described in Chapter 12.
7. Remove the steering wheel as described above in steps 3-5.
Installation

8. Installation is carried out in reverse order, taking into account the following points:

- a) Apply a coat of technical petroleum jelly to the horn contact ring and install the steering wheel on the column shaft, aligning the marks made before removal.
- b) Install the new steering wheel mounting bolt and tighten it to the required torque.
Models equipped with airbags
9. Installation is carried out in reverse order, taking into account the following points:
- a) If the contact part was turned with the steering wheel removed, center it by pressing the contact part down and turning the center part counterclockwise until it stops. From this position, turn the center back three full turns clockwise.
- b) Apply a layer of technical petroleum jelly to the horn contact ring and install the steering wheel on the column shaft. align the matrices made before removal.
- c) Check that the locating pin on top of the steering column is correctly aligned with the recess in the contact part when installing the steering wheel.
- d) Align the wheel with the column spokes, aligning the marks made before removal, and tighten the steering wheel mounting bolt to the required force.
- d) Install the air bags as described in Chapter 12.
