Carburetor Solex 4A-1 — design description (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126)

0
The Solex carburetor is a two-chamber carburetor, which consists of 4 main parts connected with screws to each other: the carburetor cover, the carburetor body, the throttle valves and the starting device. The number "4" in the carburetor designation indicates 4 mixing chambers of the carburetor, and "A" and "1" indicate the design principle and execution. Since we are talking about a double carburetor system, then in one body there are practically two carburetors, and each of both parts of the carburetor has 2 intake pipes (stage I and II). While the engine receives the working mixture at idle speed up to medium speed only through both first stages of the carburetor, then at full power and the automatic starter is switched off, both second stages are switched on (two-stage carburetor = chamber carburetor). The carburetor is secured with 4 nuts on the intake pipe, tightened with a torque of 7±1 Nm.
