Removal and installation the shock absorber (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116)

Each half of the front suspension consists of one upper and one lower wishbone, a hydraulic telescopic shock absorber and a tie rod mounted on elastic supports between the lower wishbone and the body, hereinafter referred to as a tie rod. The upper wishbones are connected to each other by an anti-roll bar. During repairs, half of the suspension can be removed as a single unit, i.e. the wishbones and the upper shock absorber mount can be disconnected from the body. The steering knuckle is connected to the wishbones by ball joints. The upper part of the shock absorber rests on rubber pads.

The suspension springs and shock absorbers are installed separately.

Removal and installation the shock absorber

The front shock absorber also serves as a suspension travel limiter, so to remove it the car must be on its wheels or the wishbones must rest on stands.

Unscrew the upper shock absorber mounting nut and remove the plate and rubber cushion.

Raise the car, and the shock absorber rod should come out of the upper mount. Place supports under the car body.

Compress the shock absorber rod and install the shock absorber vertically.

Loosen the bolt and nut of the lower shock absorber mount and remove the shock absorber.

Check the attachment points and wear of the rubber shock absorber mounting parts. When installing, secure the shock absorber in the lower wishbone and pass the rod through the body opening. Place a jack under the lower wishbone and lift it until the rod comes out. Install the rubber cushion and plate, tighten the mounting nut. Fig. 209 shows the upper and lower shock absorber mounts.
