2. Check exhaust pipes and connections, looking for leaks, extensive corrosion and damage. Check that all brackets and supports are in good condition and that the appropriate nuts and bolts are securely fastened (see fig. 15.2). Leaks at connections or other parts of the system usually show up as black soot spots in the vicinity of the leak.

3. Rumble and other vehicle noises are often determined by exhaust system parts, especially brackets and mounts. Try to move the pipes and mufflers. If the parts can come into contact with the body or suspension parts, secure the system with new fasteners. Otherwise, separate connections (if it is possible) and rotate the tubes as needed to provide additional clearance.
