Exhaust system and fastenings — condition and reliability check (Mercedes-Benz C-Class W201)

0
1. On a cold engine (at least 1 hour after the trip), check the exhaust system from the engine to the end of the tailpipe. The exhaust system is easiest to check with the vehicle raised on a lift or supported on supports so that the system components are clearly visible and accessible.

2. Check the exhaust pipes and connections, looking for leaks, extensive corrosion and damage. Make sure all brackets and supports are in good condition and that the appropriate nuts and bolts are securely fastened (see fig. 15.2). Leaks in connections or other parts of the system are usually indicated by black soot stains in the vicinity of the leak.

3. Rumbling and other vehicle noises are often caused by exhaust system components, especially brackets and fasteners. Try moving the pipes and mufflers. If the components can come into contact with the body or suspension components, secure the system with new fasteners. Otherwise, separate the connections (if possible) and rotate the tubes as needed to provide additional clearance.
