Examination
1. Wear in the universal joint is characterized by vibration in the drivetrain, noise during acceleration, and metallic creaking and annoying sounds as the bearing disintegrates.
2. Hold the front half of the driveshaft and try to turn the rear half. Play between the driveshaft halves indicates wear. If you find increased axial movement, replace the driveshaft.
Replacement
3. At the time of writing, parts for repairing the universal joint were not available. Therefore, if any joint is found to be damaged or worn, the entire universal joint must be replaced. Consult your Mercedes-Benz dealer for the current status.
4. If the driveshaft needs to be replaced, you may want to seek advice from a car repair specialist. They may be able to repair the original driveshaft or exchange it for a reconditioned one.
