Checking and adjusting the ignition timing (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126)

As a rule, the ignition timing is not adjustable. A stroboscope is required for checking.



Warm up the engine to operating temperature: the coolant temperature should be about 70°.

Connect the strobe light according to the instructions.

Caution: The vacuum supply on the engine distributor vacuum pipe remains connected or must be removed.

The air conditioning system must be switched off.

Start the engine and let it idle.



Illuminate the indicator on the block housing cover with a strobe light.

Ignition timing values

Caution: When checking the ignition timing, the vacuum supply on the distributor vacuum pipe must either remain connected or be removed according to the engine version.

If, for example, there is only fuel with a lower octane number (less than 98), then the ignition timing must be adjusted in the direction of retarding. Namely: per unit of octane number - by 1-2° of the crankshaft rotation angle.

Note: The maximum delay should not exceed 6°.
