Speed limiter (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116)

A speed limiter is installed in the ignition distributor rotor. When the rotor rotates under the action of centrifugal force, the weight overcomes the spring force and moves in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 158 to a position at which a breakdown of high voltage occurs between the weight and the mass spring. This ensures that the engine shaft speed is limited to 66501150 1/min.



A high voltage breakdown does not have a detrimental effect on the operation of the engine or ignition system. The speed limiter is precisely adjusted at the factory and it is not allowed to bend the spring during operation. If the speed of the limiter operation deviates from the above values, the rotor must be replaced.
