When driving forward, only the front sensors are activated. When reversing, both the rear and front risk zones are monitored.
The system is activated automatically when the ignition key is turned to position 2 and remains active until the vehicle speed exceeds 15 km/h - the system is also deactivated automatically.
Re-activation of the PTS occurs when the vehicle speed drops below the threshold of 15 km/h.
It is possible to forcibly turn off the PTS using a switch installed on the console section of the instrument panel (see Section Controls and interior equipment).
Attention! The correct functioning of the Parktronic system largely depends on the degree of contamination of the ultrasonic sensors mounted in the front and rear bumper linings. Interference can be introduced by sources of ultrasound (including the squeal of air brakes on trucks).
The front risk zone is monitored by six ultrasonic sensors mounted in the front bumper trim (two in the middle and two in the corners, the rear one - with four sensors in the rear bumper. The range of the sensors is 100 cm for the center front sensors, 60 cm for the corner front sensors, 120 cm for the center rear sensors and 80 cm for the outer rear sensors. The minimum allowable distance between the sensor and an obstacle is 15 cm for corner sensors and 20 cm for central sensors, then the sensitivity threshold is violated. Keep the surface of the bumpers clean.

Special indicator lights are provided on the instrument panel (see illustration 15.1) and in the assembly of the rear saloon lamp.
The indicators are divided into two sections with 6 yellow and 2 red segments in each, - the completeness of the activation of the segments corresponds to the distance to the nearest obstacle. About a dangerous approach to an obstacle (activation of the red segments of the indicators) the driver is warned by a 3-second acoustic signal.
Construction of the PTS indicator light
1 - Left side of the risk area
2 - Right side of the risk area
When connecting the trailer wiring to the tow bar connector (with appropriate vehicle equipment) the system will automatically turn off.
In the event of a malfunction of the PTS, the red segments of all system indicator lights are activated and a 3-second acoustic signal is emitted - check the cleanliness of the bumper surfaces. If necessary, drive the vehicle to a Mercedes-Benz Dealership to carry out the necessary refurbishment of the system.
