General description of steering (Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126)

The steering system consists of a steering wheel, a steering shaft, a steering gear, and a steering damper. The steering wheel is attached to the steering shaft, which transmits the steering wheel movements to the steering gear.

The greater the steering angle, the less direct the steering ratio becomes, making it easier to turn the steering wheel further, for example when parking.

With the steering wheel in the central position, the steering ratio becomes more direct, which provides greater control precision (for example, when driving at high speeds).
