1. The measurement is carried out using a hand-held tester (HHT). The test should only be carried out on an engine filled with fresh oil and with a new full-flow oil filter installed, which avoids the error associated with fuel penetration into the oil.

Note: There is no need to change the engine oil/oil filter if the mileage since the last regular replacement is less than 1000 km.

2. Carefully inspect the power unit for signs of external oil leaks; if necessary, eliminate the cause of the leaks.

3. If the check is carried out by specialists from a Mercedes-Benz branded service station, the control mileage is 250 km (the staff must be familiarized in advance with the operating conditions of the vehicle and the owner's driving style). Alternatively, the measurement can be carried out by the owner himself with a control mileage of 1000 km.



4. Strictly following the manufacturers' instructions, connect the HHT hand-held tester (087) to the vehicle's DLC diagnostic connector (X11/4).

5. To take readings, go to the subsection "Actual values" section "Active service system since last oil change" tester menu.

Attention! The value indicating oil consumption per 100 km in menu item 05 should not be used in calculations!


6. From menu item 02, read the value corresponding to the amount of oil added during the last change, for example, 6.3 l.

7. From point 05, determine the actual amount of oil at the time of measurement, for example, 5.9 l.

8. The amount of oil added to the engine recently can be determined from menu item 04 - this value must be added to the calculation.

9. From menu item 01, read the value corresponding to the mileage since the last oil change, for example, 1146 km.

10. The calculation is made according to the formula:

Oil consumption = (difference in readings in liters x 1000)/mileage = = (6.3 – 5.9)x1000/1146 = 400/1146 = 0.35 l/1000 km

11. Based on the result obtained, make timely adjustments to the oil level or perform the necessary repairs.

Petrol models produced from 01.12.00 and diesel models



1. The measurement is performed using the STAR-DIAGNOSIS scanner reader. The testing conditions are similar to those described above for gasoline models produced before 30.11.00.

2. The procedure for connecting the reader is described in Chapter Engine electrical systems.

Note: It is necessary to clear the memory of the on-board diagnostic module from the DTC codes stored in it beforehand (if there are any in it) (See Chapter Engine electrical systems).




3. It is best to read the readings at the same location where the last oil change was performed (starting point of the control run).

4. Open the subsection "KI (instrument cluster)" "Body" section of the reader's main groups menu.

5. Next, go to the item "Driven travel distance since last oil change" subsections "Active service system since last oil change" section "Active values" and determine the exact value of the control mileage, for example, 1123 km.

6. From point "Quantity of oil added during oil change" calculate the amount of oil added during the last oil change, for example, 6.3 l.

7. The actual amount of oil present in the engine can be read from the item "Last and second last detected oil quantity in engine with engine operation". Let's say, for example, 5.6 l.

8. Next, according to the formula Oil consumption = (difference in readings in liters x 1000)/mileage = (6.3–5.9)x1000/1146 = 400/1146 = 0.35 l/1000 km, determine the oil consumption: 0.7x1000/1123 = 0.62 l/1000 km.
