Replacing the transfer case seals (Mercedes-Benz G-Class W463)

Using the example of the seal of the output flange of the connection of the cardan shaft of the front axle drive (replacement of the seals of the remaining two shafts is carried out in a similar manner).

1 - Connecting flange for connecting the cardan shaft of the front axle drive; 2 - Connecting flange for connecting the cardan shaft of the transfer case drive; 3 - Connecting flange for connecting the cardan shaft of the rear axle drive; 4 - Thrust washers; 5 - Seals


1. Disconnect the cardan shafts from the transfer case (see Section Disconnecting and connecting cardan shafts on the transfer case).

2. After marking its installation position, remove the connecting flange (10) - use a puller if necessary.

3. Using a suitable extractor, remove the oil seal (5).

4. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Use a suitable mandrel to seat the seal (pre-lubricate the seal with a universal grease such as Molykote). Before installing the flange, insert the propeller shaft mounting bolts into it.
