Differential, primary and secondary shafts — removal and installation (Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168)

1. Drain the transmission oil from the gearbox.

Caution! When installing, lubricate the drain plug with sealant.


2. Remove the gearbox and install it on the stand.

3. Remove the gear shift mechanism (see the relevant chapter).

4. Remove the rear gearbox cover.

5. Unscrew the 3/12 and 4/14 hex bolts that secure the primary 3 and secondary 4 shafts (see illustration).

1\1 - gearbox housing
2 - clutch housing
3 - primary shaft
3/10 - primary shaft bearing
3/14 - thrust ring
4 - secondary (output) shaft
4/12 - secondary shaft bearing
6 - clutch release fork
7 - differential
10 - gear shift unit


Attention! Mark the shaft mounting bolts to avoid confusion during installation.


6. Remove the bearings of both shafts from the gearbox housing (see illustration 4.5).

7. Disconnect the clutch housing from the gearbox by unscrewing the mounting bolts.

8. Remove differential 7 (see illustration 4.5).

Caution: When installing the old differential or its bearings, the bearing preload must be measured and adjusted.




9. Remove the gears together with the clutch release fork 6 (see illustration 4.5).

10. Remove the input shaft seal.

Assembly and installation of the gearbox are performed in the reverse order of removal.
