General description and precautions (Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168)

0
The electronic engine control unit regulates the amount of fuel supplied and controls the ignition system. Electronic engine control systems have their advantages, which are as follows:
  • a) precise dosing of the amount of fuel in each engine operating mode, which ensures lower gasoline consumption while maintaining good dynamic performance;
  • b) reduction of the amount of harmful exhaust gases as a result of precise fuel metering and purification of exhaust gases (EG) using a catalytic converter operating under the control of an oxygen sensor;
  • c) self-diagnosis of the electronic unit, which allows you to find the fault faster. The electronic engine control unit has a function of self-checking and recording failures and malfunctions during vehicle operation. If failures occur in the ignition or injection system during operation, they are recorded. If failures occur in the operation of the injection system or the engine as a whole, you can get a sheet with a printout of fault codes in a specialized workshop for a fee, so that you can eliminate this or that defect yourself if necessary.

The electronic engine control unit is a small, fast-working computer. It determines the optimal ignition timing, fuel injection, and the volume of fuel injected. At the same time, the engine control unit coordinates its actions with the control units of other vehicle systems, such as the gearbox control unit or the anti-theft system.

All ignition and fuel injection system components are designed for long service life and require virtually no repairs. Maintenance only requires replacing the removable air filter element and spark plugs. Basic adjustment and repair work can only be performed using expensive control and measuring devices.

For this reason, repairs and adjustments should be entrusted to specialized workshops that have the necessary instruments and devices.

Safety rules when working with the fuel injection system

  • No open flames or sparks near the workplace!
  • No smoking!
  • The workplace must be equipped with a fire extinguisher!
  • Ensure good ventilation of the work area. Fuel fumes are toxic.
  • The fuel system is under pressure. Relieve the pressure in the fuel system before disconnecting the hoses.
  • Before disconnecting the pipes, place a rag over the connection point.
