Design of the gear shift drive of the 717.4 series manual transmission (models ML 230)
1 - Shift rod; 2 - Rod head; 3 - Threaded pin
1. The design details of the 717.4 series manual transmission shift drive are shown in the illustration, to which all references in the text refer.
2. Park the car on a level horizontal surface.
3. Shift into neutral.
4. Pushing forward (in the direction of movement), move the shift lever with the rod head installed out of the center position.
5. Align the rod (1) with the head (2).
6. Move the transmission shift lever to the center position and engage by inserting the end of the shift rod into the head (2).
7. Without allowing the rod with the head (1 and 2) to turn and without moving the shift lever from the central position, tighten the threaded pin (3).
8. Check the freedom of movement of the locking pin and the correct longitudinal installation of the shift rods.
9. Remove the locking pin and test the shift drive with the engine running. Check the clearance values of the rods engaging the lever on the support bracket in all transmission positions.
