Removal and installation the front propeller shaft (Mercedes-Benz M-Class W163)

Cardan shafts are used to transmit torque from the transfer case, which is fixed to the rear side of the manual transmission/automatic transmission, to the differentials of the front and rear drive axles.

Attention! Self-locking bolts and adjusting washers must be replaced!


1. The front propeller shaft installation details are shown in the illustration, to which all references in the text refer.

2. Unscrew the self-locking bolts (70d) securing the propeller shaft to the output flange of the transfer case.

3. Unscrew the self-locking bolts (70b) securing the propeller shaft to the drive flange of the front differential, remove the adjusting washers (70c).

4. Carefully lower the propeller shaft (70), move it forward and remove it from under the vehicle.

5. Assess the degree of wear of the constant velocity joint (CV joint) at the front end of the shaft and the dual cardan joint at the rear; replace the shaft assembly if necessary.

6. Installation is carried out in the reverse order - carefully clean the mating surfaces, ensure that the connecting flanges of the shaft and transfer case/front differential joint assemblies are correctly centered.
