Battery — Checking the Electrolyte Level (Mercedes-Benz A-Class W168)

Checking and increasing the electrolyte level



The amount of electrolyte in the battery, installed as standard at the factory, is usually sufficient for the entire service life of the battery. The battery, together with the main fuse box, is located under the footwell on the passenger side.

1. Unscrew plug 3 if the electrolyte level in one of the cells has dropped below mark-1 (MIN) (see illustration).

Warning! Do not expose the battery to open flame. Explosion possible!


2. Add distilled water to each cell up to the 2 (MAX) mark. The electrolyte level should be approximately 5 mm above the lead plates (see illustration 35.1).

3. Screw in and tighten the plugs. Before doing this, check the sealing rings on the plugs and replace them with new ones if they are damaged.

4. Charge the battery, see the relevant chapter.
